A Small Product With a Big Impact: My Honest Zevo Flying Insect Trap Review

Some of the most useful vacation-rental products are not the biggest, most expensive or most noticeable. They are the small additions that quietly solve a recurring problem before it affects another guest.

For us, the Zevo Flying Insect Trap has been one of those products. After using it in the kitchen and garage of our rentals, it has made a noticeable difference in controlling fruit flies and other small flying insects during the warmer months.

The problem we were trying to solve

Vacation rentals often host larger groups, and many arrive planning to cook full meals together. That is part of the experience, but it also means food may be left out, fruit can become overripe, trash cans may be overfilled and bags are not always tied securely before being placed in the outdoor bins.

There are also times when a property is not cleaned immediately after checkout. If the next turnover is a day or two later, food scraps or trash may sit long enough to create ideal breeding conditions for flies.

The adult house flies were never the hardest part. They were visible and we could usually take care of them with a fly swatter. The smaller fruit flies and gnats were different. They were much harder to see, nearly impossible to corral individually and could linger even after the obvious source had been removed.

That mattered because small fly problems can grow quickly when warm, moist organic material is available. Good sanitation and prompt trash removal remain the first line of defense, but we wanted something that could keep working between visits and catch the insects we could not easily see.

What the Zevo trap is

The Zevo Flying Insect Trap is a plug-in device that uses blue and ultraviolet light to attract small flying insects. Once they approach the device, they become trapped on a removable adhesive cartridge concealed behind it.

There are no sprays, odors or loud zapping sounds. From the front, it looks more like a compact plug-in light than a traditional insect trap. The captured insects remain on the back of the cartridge, mostly out of view until the cartridge is removed.

Setup and operation

Setup is genuinely plug-and-play:

  1. Remove the protective backing from the adhesive cartridge.
  2. Slide the cartridge into the plug-in base.
  3. Plug the unit into a standard indoor outlet near the problem area.
  4. Leave it operating continuously and check the cartridge periodically.

We placed ours in the kitchen and garage—the two areas where food, fruit and garbage made flying insects most likely to appear. Zevo recommends replacing the cartridge when it is full or approximately every 30 to 45 days. In practice, the timing will depend on the season and the amount of insect activity.

What happened in our rentals

Within about two weeks, we checked the cartridges and were pleasantly surprised by how many small flies had been captured. The back looked like a graveyard of fruit flies—clear evidence that the device had been working quietly while the homes were occupied and between turnovers.

Since installing the traps, we hardly notice fruit flies anymore. That does not mean the device replaces cleaning, properly tied trash bags or prompt garbage removal. It works best as another layer of prevention, especially for the tiny insects that are difficult to catch manually.

The guest experience

Guests have not commented on the Zevo traps themselves, which I consider a positive. The devices are unobtrusive, make no noise and do not create a chemical smell. More importantly, guests have not had to think about the problem they are helping to prevent.

Before we added them, we did receive guest comments about flying insects. Since installing them, the issue has become far less noticeable.

What I like

  • It works quietly in the background. There is no spray, odor or zapping sound.
  • The results are visible. You can inspect the back of the cartridge and see what has been caught.
  • It is easy to maintain. Replacing the cartridge is quick and does not require touching the trapped insects.
  • It is discreet enough for guest spaces. From the front, it resembles a small plug-in light.
  • The blue light can be useful. In our kitchen and garage, it doubles as a soft night-light.

What could be better

  • It occupies an outlet. That may be inconvenient in a kitchen with limited receptacles.
  • The light is always visible. We welcome it in our chosen locations, but it may be too bright for a bedroom or another dark sleeping area.
  • Replacement cartridges are an ongoing cost. The unit is not a one-time purchase if it is used continuously.
  • It is not a substitute for sanitation. Food residue, drains, overripe produce and trash still need to be addressed at the source.

Pricing and ongoing cost

At the time of our purchase, the package containing one plug-in base and three cartridges was priced at approximately $26 on Amazon. Prices and package configurations can change, so I recommend checking the current listing before purchasing.

If the device runs year-round and cartridges are replaced every 30 to 45 days, expect to use roughly eight to twelve cartridges per device each year. Seasonal use may reduce that total.

Who it is best for

I would consider this product especially useful for:

  • Vacation rentals that host large groups who frequently cook
  • Properties where trash sometimes sits between checkout and cleaning
  • Kitchens, garages or utility areas that experience seasonal fruit flies or gnats
  • Hosts who want a quiet, discreet supplement to regular cleaning and pest prevention

Would I purchase it again?

Yes—and I already have.

This is a small product with a large impact. It solved a recurring seasonal issue without adding another complicated task to our turnover process. Once installed, it works quietly and gives us a visible way to confirm that it is doing its job.

Final verdict

The Zevo Flying Insect Trap is not glamorous, and guests may never notice it. That is exactly why it earns its place in our rentals. It helps prevent a small problem from becoming a guest-facing issue, requires very little attention and has been effective in the areas where we needed it most.

For kitchens, garages and other indoor areas prone to fruit flies and gnats, it is an easy product to recommend—provided it is used alongside consistent cleaning and trash management.
